Written in 1966 for the film Alfie, “Alfie’s Theme” holds a special place in jazz history. It showcases Rollins’ extraordinary ability to blend lyricism, improvisational freedom, and powerful storytelling through music. This particular recording was made in 1998 and originally appeared on Theo Kapilidis’ album B J EX’S. Today, the re-release serves as a heartfelt tribute to the memory and enduring legacy of Sonny Rollins, celebrating his immense contribution to the international jazz scene.

With deep respect for the original composition and a fresh creative spirit, Theo Kapilidis delivers the piece with a vibrant and authentic approach, highlighting the timeless quality of Rollins’ music.

About Theo Kapilidis

Theo Kapilidis is a jazz guitarist and composer based in Zurich, Switzerland. Born in Greece, he grew up in a highly musical family and was introduced to jazz at an early age through his father’s record store. At the age of twelve, he set aside the piano and devoted himself completely to the guitar.

He completed his five-year jazz studies at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern at the age of 25. Since graduating, he has performed countless jazz concerts and participated in a wide range of musical projects. In 1985 he returned to his hometown of Thessaloniki, where he worked as a studio musician and taught at the Synchronous Conservatory, while also recording his first pieces with the Electric Jazz Trio.

Since returning to Switzerland in 1991, Theo has collaborated with many renowned jazz musicians, including John Voirol, Heiri Känzig, Matthieu Michel, Christoph Stiefel, Nik Bärtsch, Kaspar Rast, Daniel Schenker, Chris Wiesendanger, Björn Meyer, Reto Suhner, as well as internationally acclaimed artists such as Manny Boyd, Eddie Daniels, and Johnny Vidacovich.

He currently teaches at the Zurich University of the Arts. As a bandleader, he has released four albums, including Tritonia – Home Away From Home (2022), TO EN (Neoplatonic Trio, 2019), and Inside Views(2016).
